About LeRoy

Beyond Party Politics

LeRoy Alaways, Write-In Candidate for Florida Lieutenant Governor

LeRoy Alaways is one of the smartest people I have met and while we don't always agree on everything he challenges me to think about what's important. While I am a registered Democrat, LeRoy is a registered Republican. We both believe our government should put the needs of the citizens before party politics and we both want what's best for our daughters. We both want to see Florida thrive and Floridians prosper. Before becoming a candidate, LeRoy has been volunteering his time to help make our campaign stronger and to provide a different view from my own, making our policies and plans more inclusive and feasible. Our families enjoy spending time with each other, with all the girls playing together often and our wives friendly baking challenges leading to two happy households. I am proud to have LeRoy Alaways as my choice for Lieutenant Governor.

Introducing LeRoy Alaways

I am a classical man of many hats and homes in which to hang them. I am currently, and for the past 12 years, a retired full-time stay-at-home dad of twin middle school girls. My story starts in California, attending small schools with summertime employment in agriculture. Starting with a hoe at 12; to driving harvesting equipment at 22. Summer employment paid for two college degrees, one in Mathematics and the other in Mechanical Engineering. High unemployment led me to graduate school at the Davis campus of the University of California, where initially I found myself scrubbing toilets in a bowling alley for rent money. A fortunate encounter with a professor resulted in the long and winding path through cutting-edge technology, laying the groundwork of modern sports engineering. Along the way, I moved in and out of sports research, defense work, more sports research, and finally teaching. My work experiences varied from javelin aerodynamics, guidance and control of intercontinental ballistic missiles, kinetic kill vehicle development in the Strategic Defense Initiative, tracking the trajectories of baseball and developing a virtual reality bobsled simulator. But my true love is, and always has been, teaching. My undergraduate pizza money was earned tutoring mathematics 10 hours a week, then during my Ph.D., I had the honor to teach multiple engineering courses at UC-Davis, before moving on as a teaching postdoc to the United States Military Academy, West Point. I returned to California for a few other teaching assignments before a stint at Temple University in the inner city of Philadelphia, finally moving a few miles away to Villanova University. I met my future wife, a green card-carrying immigrant from China, in Philly. I encouraged her to follow her dreams, which led us to Tampa, where she found her dream at USF. I spent one year teaching public high school in Tampa and left to take care of my kids and watch them grow. I’ve never shied away from the hard job. The impossible was not in my vocabulary, and dreams never died. Buried in all of that are 42 addresses, other really cool jobs, countless committee assignments, papers read, edited, graded, and a life, based on faith, well lived.
